Ever think you’d like to be more involved in your community and somehow be “part of the solution”? As a home builder and remodeling contractor focused on “green building” here in the greater Tampa Bay area, we take pride in our focus on building and remodeling homes that offer energy efficiency and healthy living choices for the families who live in them. However, sometimes we’re left with the feeling that we need to be doing more. This weekend we did a little more and are now posting this blog in the hope that you might also get the bug to get involved and do something similar around Tampa Bay.
This weekend my wife Charity and I participated in the annual Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day, www.oceanconservancy.org ,which was locally coordinated by Tampa Bay Watch in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash from oceans and waterways in 104 countries and 42 US states, which is pretty incredible! We participated in the event at Fort Desoto Park in south Pinellas and had a great day.
We met a lot of nice people and it felt good to do our small part to make a difference in our local community. The large group of volunteers were broken down into smaller groups to clean up different areas throughout the park. Our group was assigned to work the mangroves, which was fun. With our hip waders, rubber gloves, extension grabbers, and garbage bags we worked our way through the mangroves and picked up everything we saw. Our small group managed to fill about 10 full bags of trash in just a couple of hours. It wasn’t hard work, but it was rewarding work, and we feel better for having done it.
