Building on our previous post regarding American-made drywall and the concern that it could exhibit similar characteristics to Chinese drywall, National Gypsum has now launched a new website to help dispel any misinformation regarding their drywall – www.DrywallFacts.com.
According to their press release “The site includes both basic facts about drywall as well as more detailed scientific information and links to other relevant websites. It is meant to serve as a central repository of key information and a quick reference for use by the media, vendors, suppliers, builders and consumers.”
At Charter Bay we are aware of these concerns and had the issue come up about a month ago with one of our projects. Upon hearing of these concerns, the homeowner asked that we test their new American-made drywall before we installed it into their home. From their perspective, they had already experienced one nightmare with the Chinese Drywall that was installed in their home, and they didn’t want to take the chance of installing another potential drywall problem. They were aware that the claims regarding American-made drywall had not been substantiated, but decided the expense of the testing ($500 for five samples) was worth the peace of mind. To relieve their concerns, we stocked the house with the new drywall, and then took a 2″ x 2″ sample from each type of drywall. The samples were then delivered to a lab. After one week we received the test results back as “negative” and then proceeded with the drywall installation.
Although we are not recommending this additional testing as part of our standard chinese drywall remediation protocol, we do understand why our homeowner’s would choose to go ahead and test their new drywall prior to install. We will continue following this and update you on any new findings as they occur.
