Signs of a Good Chinese Drywall Remediation Contractor – Part 3
In our last few posts, we discussed different ways a good Chinese drywall remediation contractor can ensure that your home is protected during a lengthy remediation process. The first phase of every Chinese drywall remediation should always be spent protecting and prepping the home for the remediation process. We’ve showed you the systems we used to protect the flooring, thresholds and interior stairs on 4000 square foot Chinese drywall remediation job we are currently working on in Hillsborough county on Davis Islands.
CBHB Chinese Drywall Remediation Protection Systems – Exterior Stairs
As with interior stairs, exterior stairs are also one of the most important components to protect during a Chinese drywall remediation. They are the main way in and out of the home, so they endure a lot of heavy traffic during the demolition and rebuild phases. As we previously mentioned, stairs are not only one of the most important components to protect, they are also one of the most difficult.
Exterior stairs present a different set of problems when it comes to protecting them from damage. This particular home in Tampa has stone paver steps leading up into the home. Because of the amount of traffic that will be going in and out of the home during demolition to reach the dumpster out front, it’s critical we take the time to protect them from any damage. A hammer inadvertently dropped could spell disaster.
Stone stairs like these represent somewhat of a challenge because the protection system can not be screwed into place and later patched the way they can be with the interior wood stairs. To get around this issue, we designed a custom system that did not require screws to hold it into place. For this particular set of stairs, we used a cushioning layer of carpet padding, 2 layers of OSB sheeting, and a front stair nosing protector. Finally, we added side bracing to hold the system in place in order to ensure it was safe and solid during the entire process.
We have completed two weeks of the preparation and demo phases of the project and this protection system has worked perfectly.
In our next post, we will look at how we go about protecting the salvaged components that are stored off-site during the remediation process, such as kitchen and bath cabinets, granite, doors, and window treatments.
