A couple weeks ago we were audited for our Workers’ Compensation Insurance and according to our auditor, we received an “A”!!
Of course we were proud of our grade, but if you were our client why should you care?
In a nutshell, our “A” rating means we diligently ensure that all of our subcontractors are fully and legally insured for every one of their workers before anyone ever steps onto one of our job sites.
The State of Florida has very specific requirements regarding the workers’ compensation insurance that contractors need to carry for themselves, their employees and their subcontractors. Despite these requirements, there are contractors who foolishly operate without meeting these requirements and those who fail to properly track and monitor the insurance their subcontractors carry.
To say that we take all of this seriously at Charter Bay is a bit of an understatement. This is one of those “behind the scenes” activities that most of our homeowners are never even aware of, but is something our office staff diligently tracks and monitors.
Again, so why is this so important, and why is it something you should consider when choosing your custom builder?
Because construction sites are dangerous places. Accidents do happen, and people do get hurt. In 2012 alone, OSHA reported there were 775 job site fatalities in the construction industry.
What if someone was hurt or killed on your property?
It would be horrible, but even more so if it were discovered that the person injured or killed did not have proper Worker’s Comp coverage.
Even a small accident can have trickle down effects — from construction delays and suspensions, to lawsuits.
We have been fortunate not to have had any accidents occur on any of our sites, but if something unfortunate should ever happen, we rest well knowing that our clients, our employees and our company are protected.
In an upcoming blog, we will discuss the steps we take to help prevent job site accidents from occurring in the first place.
