The new construction process continues…
When you build a custom home, one of the most exciting days of the entire construction process will be the day the stem wall is blocked up and finished; this is the day where you will first begin to see the structure of your new home start to take shape.
As excited as our homeowners are on this day, there’s a few behind-the-scenes, technical considerations taking place when building the stem wall on a new home.
We believe it’s worth spending a little extra money to install a better grade of concrete mix to fill the block cells. This mix is called “Cell-Fill” concrete and it is specifically used by conscientious home builders who strive for well-built, quality custom homes.
In addition to using Cell-Fill concrete, we take it a step further. Unless the stem wall is very high, we do not actually pour the rebar-filled cells of our stem wall at this time.
Instead, we will fill those cells at the same time we pour our concrete slab on top of the stem wall. By using larger aggregate concrete with fiber added, we are not only creating a stronger slab, but are also helping to create a stronger foundation that is tied-in even more securely to the footers.
Building a strong home capable of surviving our Tampa Bay weather is the first goal of any new construction project. The additional step of pouring the rebar-filled cells of the stem wall at the same time we pour the concrete slab will make that connection even stronger because there is no break point between the slab and those cells.
